Thanks

I've played in bands since the early 1960's. In those days we used mainly ribbon mikes or moving coil, Shure Unidyne or Unisphere, Calrec or Bayer. You had to be careful that no-one blew into them as many people did, for some unknown reason, to see if they were on. Inside the wire mesh was a sponge rubber 'pop suppressor' that stopped, or was supposed to do, and harsh sounds from b's and p's. Under that was the coil or ribbon. The latter was a thin flat metal strip that ran all the way round the coil. The moving coil mikes were usually the sphere type with a diaphragm on top connected to the mike by a thin wire. You had to make sure this or the ribbon were insulated against any other metal or they didn't work. There were two main problems with these mikes, one was the feedback, since they would howl if placed anywhere near the speakers, and the other was the electric shocks you used to get. I've had them from a mild tingling when my lips touched the gauze or a belt that threw me across the stage. Happy days!
