I'm a single woman in her 30s and may move up there if a job opportunity presents itself.

The reason why I want to know is because I may consider technical writing as a career (after I take a course) and I hear all the jobs are up there in the Silicon Valley.

BD, you must be joking. What do you mean San Jose is a person??? It's a place! Have you been living under a rock? And who gave you thumbs up? What a lame answer. Whatever.

According to reports, surveys and statistics, San Jose is a great place to live. I don't know why but it's supposed to be the number one city to live in on the west coast. I would think Los Altos or the Palo Alto hills would be more serene and certainly more rural, and Saratoga is a quaint town just outside of San Jose nestled up against the coastal mountain range. It really comes down to what you can afford, I guess, but the suburbs around San Jose, towards the west, are the best in my opinion. That would include Saratoga, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Redwood City sucks and is also too far to want to commute to work in San Jose. San Mateo/Hillsdale/Belmont are very expensive and also a 40 minute commute to to San Jose. South of San Jose there's Hollister, about an hour's drive, which is supposed to still have decent affordable housing. Just immediately south of San Jose is Morgan Hill, also on the pricey side. The entire Bay Area is very expensive to live in, it's ridiculous what they charge for renting a place anywhere in the Bay Area.

I live in San Jose and I love it!

I've lived in Midtown San Jose and now I live downtown.

It's not boring there's plenty of clubs, restaurants and bars. You get the Northern California vibe with out all the crowds. I like San Jose and the South Bay (surrounding area) more than San Francisco. The roads are paved better, this is the safest metro area in the country.

San Jose is a VERY clean city and it always looks like someone is picking up the trash behind you (I don't litter for that fact).

When it comes to restaurants we have ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you can think of and it's done great. We dont have the crime and homeless people that San Francisco have, there's plenty of tech jobs. It isnt as cold, foggy or rainy as San Francisco. There is less traffic and did I mention less crowds? Santa Cruz is also only 30 minutes away.

San Jose is great. People that were born here dont know how good they have it. They are spoiled rotten. I'm proud of San Jose and proud to live here. I'm going on my 2nd year as a San Jose resident.

in case you do finally end up shifting to San Jose, attempt to get on the West area close to Campbell, Los Gatos section, and get into the Campbell Union intense college District, superb district around. there's a lot to do interior the section and around San Jose besides. good success. circulate SHARKS!!!

It's boring ,boring, boring. If you're a single woman and want a social life don't go to San Jose. Try San Francisco, although it's a lonh comute to San Jose for work, about 50 -60 minutes each way

I agree completely with cjericko. I live right in the middle of downtown and I love it. The only thing I don't like is that there are virtually no stores/shopping downtown. However, Santana Row and Westfield Mall are only about 5 miles away. I highly recommend this city if you have the chance to move here.

I think its a great city to live in. I was born and raised in California. Good business and jobs in the area. Large and safe city with plenty of activities around. SF is only around 50-60 minutes away. One bad thing is you there aren't any beaches that are 5-10 minutes away.

It depends.I live in Cupertino, which is right next to San Jose, and I've been here for 17 years so I know what I'm talking about. San Jose is a "big city", so you get what you get normally with a big city: lots of criminals, lots of people, lots of concrete, lots of noise. I might be a little bias because I'm SICK of living here. People are stupid, ignorant, and unrelentless. The only reason people live here are to make money, and that is ALL they care about. I dont even like making eye contact with a lot of people a see, because I dont want to start anything. There are ALOT of the "ganster" type, especially in San Jose. San Jose had around 2,000 rapes last year, about 1,200 violent crimes. Research the crime rates for San Jose.If you really want to move here, move to Cupertino. It is the better of many evils. Not as many people, barely any crime besides your idiot teenagers, and it is a pretty nice place to live. I'm not afraid of walking around at night here in Cupertino. San Jose, I wont do it too often or the law of averages will get you.Another nice place is Saratoga. Kind of ritzy but as with ritzy areas, there is less crime and people, and a better place to live and/or raise a family.Remember however, I hate people and I hate living in a concrete jungle. But one thing is true, I got this way from living here! Driving around here is like watching a video on how NOT to drive, especially all the asians. People keep to themselves, are reluctant to even help you if you are on the side of the road broken down; its happened to me. Sadly that is also because people dont want to get shot/raped.If you don't mind alot of people, noise, crime, idiots, than by all means come here. If you HAVE to move here, move to Cupertino. TRUST ME! You dont want to live anywhere else. Its expensive here, but its worth it.
