Carls was only in the West. Hardees was mostly in the East. Carls parent company bought Hardees, but they keep the name of whichever of the two was most popular in that particular area. They have some different menu items, but use the same commercials with different names.,

Hardees (founded in North Carolina) was a separate company until about 10 years ago when they were bought out by the Carls Jr. company. Now they're one in the same. They are still called Hardees in the south.

Oh I didn't know that was the case. I have lived in Alaska most of my life. We got a Carl's Jr. here several years ago and I enjoy it. I have heard of Hardee's but didn't know it was the same thing. I am going to the east coast over Christmas. I guess I can skin going to Hardee's but I still want to get a drink from Sonic.
