Gm has a series of sensors that will trigger that light. Everything from being almost out of oil to leaving your gas cap loose when you get gas. To avoid getting charged for something when you don't need to, check your cars major systems....water, oil, tranny fluid etc. If all is ok then look at rubber.....belts, hoses, vacuum tubes. If all that is ok its most likely alright to drive it for a while. Sometimes to reset a check engine light your car has to reach a certain temp (highway speeds) for a period of time at least three times to reset the light. You also can get a check engine light for a need to reset your rear brakes after a super hard stop. Put the car in reverse, get up to a pretty good little speed of a few miles per hour in reverse and stop your car with the brakes. Do this at least 3 times. This may reset the light. It may take a while for the light to extinguish. If all this leads to no avail then you go to the "somethings broke" dept. A sensor could be failing or bad, the computer could be detecting a fuel line problem (Filter, gauge or pump).....thats pretty much time to go to the repair shop or dealer. But try all the simple stuff first. Your car is at the age where some stuff is probably wearing out. Not bad....just needs fixing. Good luck.

A few options, buy your own OBDII scanner making sure it has the capability to clear trouble codes, go to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts, maybe another local parts store can do it also and see if they can read and clear your codes(FREE), or finally go to a Chevrolet dealer and get them to clear them. Just remember the dealer will cost an arm and a leg but will be more reliable. They have more accurate readers and can determine if the problem that caused the light to come on is gone. Question is, did you fix the problem that caused it to come on or are you just wanting to try to get it off without fixing the problem? Light won't stay off of you did not fix the issue.

You can't reset the SES light unless you have a scanner. It is only erased when the buttons are selected. The code will erase if the PCM sees about 50 self tests of the fault in a row without a failure.

use a scan tool to clear the code out or disconnect the battery for 2 minutes, then run the car. If the light comes back on, there may be other problems.

How about correcting the problem that is causing the light to come on. It could be something as simple as the gas cap not being on tightly, or considering the age of the vehicle, maybe a vacuum hose or canister is the problem.

It has to be some type of sensor malfunctioning. It is usually a oxigen sensor. Other possibilities are transmission sensor, misfiring. I suggest go to the nearest Autozone and have them check the cars computer management system. Its FREE

I know on one of my cars it was somewhere under the steering wheel near the fuse box maybe. but not sure about yours. It might be really small and hard to see. try feeling around.

unhook the positive battery cable for 1 minute and then reconnect it. it should turn off. if not, you have another problem and need to have it checked again.
