Actually, I don't think that is a requirement. As far as I know, most non-fiction books are simply labeled that way because that is how the publisher decided to label them. If they had to be based upon proven truths, you would see nearly books by politicians in the fiction section.

To avoid the question, most libraries/book stores have a separate section for spiritual and religious topics, outside of fiction or non-fiction.

Also, non-fiction does not have to be proven. Theory and speculation also gets lumped into non-fiction.

Not that simple. The Bible is largely a historical document created over centuries. No one is alive from those ancient times to ask if certain things happened or did not.

Also, many MANY non-fiction books have been written with disputed facts. Shall we also classify all of those as fiction?

Many anthropologists and archaeologists have used the bible to guide them to cities thought lost. Much of the bible is historical fact and has been empirically verified.

Of course, much of the bible is contradictory, but this can be attributed to the fact that it is not from a single author or time. It was written over the course of centuries, not mere years.

And much of it may seem silly to modern sensibilities, but this is at least as much an indictment of Humanity as of the Bible.

An unavoidable fact remains, no other work has had a greater influence on the Western world. Rather you accept the bible as fable or Divinely inspired is irrelevant; it has profoundly shaped the world politically, spiritually, and literately.

Non fiction books don't have to be based on proven truths, you silly nit!
History, biography, politics, etc etc - all are based on the author's opinion of what is true.
It's science that needs to be based on proven facts.

Religious texts are not classified as either fiction or non-fiction.
