Do we need a magic deity to give us morals?

The country of Norway was rated as the most peaceful country in the world in a 2007 survey by Global Peace Index. [9] A 2005 Gallup Poll found that 72% of the people of Norway are Atheist or Agnostic, and only 10% of the people of Norway are Christians. Why do we Americans seem to think that we need a magic deity to give us morals?

It isn't so much that God gives us morals. It is that God is a constant moral authority and judge over our actions to hold us accountable. If we make up our own standards for morality and hold ourselves accountable, then we will eventually change the rules so that we fit. Because of our human capacity for self justification , we need to be held accountable to a higher moral authority. If we think otherwise, it is because of our ability for self deception.
