Hell, I'd probably just move to Canada. I'd want to be somewhere it is recognized.

I plan to do both but not in Canada. I want to have the private ceremony in where it would be a legal marriage in Amsterdam or somewhere exotic that recognizes same sex marriages and then I will have the public ceremony for my family at home. Even though it wouldn't be recognized back in the states I want that paper that says my marraige matters.

If I stand on the roof of my house with a pair of binoculars, on a clear day I can see far into a state in the US where same sex marriage is legal. If I turn a little I can see into another state where civil unions are legal. In my very own state sometime in the next year civil unions will be legal. If I turn north I can't see over the mountains but I know that were I to climb one I'd be looking into Canada where same sex marriage is legal.
I'm not leaving my house, my country or my state in order to that which is legal within the line of my vision but blocked to me because of some imaginary line in the sand. No sir, I will not. This is my country and I am staying here and I will fight to make same sex marriage legal.
I never abandoned my country before, I'm not going to do it now even though my country is trying to abandon me.

I want to have the right to marry my wife, PERIOD. I would love to visit Canada and all, but I want my relationship to be recognized. Heck, heterosexuals can go to Las Vegas to marry and its recognized! Bummer! Okay, enough venting.
My wife and I had a commitment ceremony in September. We did that, but we still want to have a legal, recognized ceremony, too.

Well I can have it in my own country, the UK. However, Canada is a beautiful country, I have done a lot of travelling in Canada, so I might go there for the ceremony.

if it won't be recognized when I get home then I might as well have a ceremony locally so my friends and family won't have to spend all that money and go to Canada

I WOULDN'T BE HAPPY WITH EITHER. MARRIAGE IS BOGUS AT THIS POINT IN OUR SOCIETY. GAY OR NOT, DIVORCE IS SO HIGH IN THIS COUNTRY, WHAT WOULD IT MATTER ANYWAY? WE USE THE LICENSE OF MARRIAGE TO TIE ONE ANOTHER DOWN, WHEN IN THE INTERIM WE DON'T RESPECT OR VALUE THE NATURE NATURAL COMMITMENT WITHOUT A PAPER THAT STATES THE LEGALITY OF THE UNITY OF TWO PEOPLE.

No, because it wouldn't be recognized here in the US, it's kind of pointless in my opinion.
I will continue to fight to gain full access to legal marriages right here in the US where it will actually matter.

I would not go to another country. However I wouldn't marry some one of the same sex either.

Why go to Canada when I could have such a ceremony here in the UK if I wanted one.
