The earth is hit by tons of debris every day, every particle can if you are looking in the right direction at the right time appear as a shooting star. However unless you are very far from artificial light sources only the brightest ones will be visible and then only at night. Usually the best viewing times are when the earth passes though known debris trails from large interstellar objects (yes comets and meteors) I do believe the next peak viewing time is the Orionids meteor shower.

You can see a few meteors per hour any clear night. Early morning, before morning twilight, is the best time. A dark sky away from any light is preferable.

The next significant shower is the Orionids, peaking around October 21, but already producing some meteors. The American Meteor Society website has a lot of meteor information, including a calendar of meteor showers: http://www.amsmeteors.org/showers.html#2007

You can see meteors (shooting stars) any clear dark night. They can't be predicted much better than that. You will generally see more meteors after midnight (I like the front windshield analogy!), and more during one of the annual meteor showers others have mentioned. But I never go out looking for meteors, and almost always see one or two every clear night. You won't see many in Vancouver proper; you need to get outside the city, away from lght pollution.

Let me ask a similar question: when you are driving along the freeway at high speed where will you most likely see insects smashing into your car, the front windshield or the rear window?

The front windshield, of course, because it is sweeping up the insects in its path while the ones it misses will just pass over or around the car and likely never hit the rear window. You will also pick up a few on the side windows if you catch them just as they are crossing your path.

The earth is traveling at high speed on its orbital freeway around the sun. As you watch the sun get lower in the sky and finally set, you are looking out the "back window" of the earth's atmosphere relative to its motion around the sun. After midnight and in the early morning hours and just before dawn (while it is still somewhat dark) you are looking out the "front windshield" of earth's atmosphere in the direction we are traveling around the sun. There are always left-over particles the size of a grain of sand in our pathway.Other particles, from the size of a grain of sand to a mile or more across, are moving in other orbits that cross our path. Some well-known particles that cross our path are leftovers from comets that passed our way on their orbits around the sun in the past.

When these particles smash into our atmospher they usually vaporize in a flash of light -- a meteor or shooting star. Only the larger chunks that enter our atmosphere and burn up have enough material to make it to the surface of the earth where they are then called meteorites. And even so, we pick up tons of new material every day from these encounters

So when is the best time to see meteors? A few hours after midnight when we are looking through the "front windshield" of our atmosphere in the direction of travel around the sun.

If you have a dark enough sky you will see several meteors an hour just about any night (in the early morning) of the year. If you go to a website such as www.skyandtelescope.com you can find the dates when the earth will be crossing the paths of the leftovers from comets, and if you are lucky you may be treated to a meteor shower of hundreds of shooting stars an hour. You can even see them in the evening through our back or side windows if that happens to be when we encounter the stream of particles crossing our path.

You can see sporadic meteors at any time.

The best time is during a shower, and just before dawn. Get away from the city for the best views.
