some onion sets left over from last year, if planted would they succeed or is it best to bin them?

Onions keep moisture inside the core for long time, if planted they are sure to succeed, go ahead

bin them as they will run straight to seed

If they have stayed dry and show no signs of sprouting or mold I would try them myself.

They may grow but won't do well. They will be small and weak and mostly try to go to seed.
