I've purchased three Dell laptops do far. An XPS M1710, and the new Dell 14" and 15.1" laptop. I don't remember the names...1521, and 1420 or something. Anyway, I looked at HP, Sager, Alienware, Sony, Asus, and some. I initially canceled with Dell because they had some scam going. They were selling crap they didn't have and giving insane ship dates. Some were 4 months out. Well, I canceled with Dell and looked around. I ended up coming back to Dell and buying a $2000 laptop for $1100 with a coupon. I also bought my wife the 14" one for $900 and something. I contacted Dell's "crappy support" and they never had me on Hold for more than five minutes and I was always able to chat online with someone. Their "crappy support" never mislead me or lead me astray. They ARE however from India or something, but they spoke English quite well to my surprise. Anyway after about 5 days of 6 hour web surfing and reviewing pretty much every laptop manufacturer(even some I never heard of like Sager) I went back to dell and got my laptop 2 days later. Initially I had a 4 week ship date, but I changed the color, and got it almost immediately.
Specs are:
2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo
2GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT 256MB
160GB HDD 7200rpm
DVD Burner

Oh its the 1520. I got it all for $1100+. I got $375 off from a coupon.

Also, MAKE sure you look around for Dell coupons. Just go to google and search for Dell coupons. You will most likely find something to drop the price a little.

I'm not a Dell fanboy either. I just went with my best option. I ALMOST went HP, but changed my mind because they didn't have the options I wanted.

First off, please ignore people who continue to dish out the "you can only use Dell parts in Dells" myth, this is just plain bogus. Considering its a laptop, there are very few parts that are upgradeable, but among them are the RAM, the hard drives and the CPU, and guess what, you can buy them from anyone, not just Dell. As for the tech support, that has a lot of truth to it I have to say, you will probably not be overly impressed. As far as quality of the builds, Dell is right up there with any of the manufacturers, HP, Toshiba, etc, they are all fairly close. Lenovo is a bit ahead, and the Gateway/Acer/eMachines conglomerate is a little behind.

As for this particular one, without any specific specs, it would be hard to say if it was worth the $600.

You are going to get alot of mixed answers as it is an opinion question.

I would recommend dell but not for there laptops. They tend to have some LCD issues and there hard dirves have a history of failing. For the price though they are pretty good and dell does have a very good warranty program and will replace any parts that fail.

I would suggest a Toshiba or HP if you can afford one. They tend to last a lot longer and will cost you less in the long run. If you do go with dell just make sure you purchase an extended warranty plan.

I am a Dell tech, and I've always do my personal best to get the Customer what they need to solve the problem. And no we won't charge you anything if you are six months out. As you still will be under warranty. Also, I feel that I speak English fluently, as I was born and raised in the USA, and currently reside therein. If you were to get a Dell XPS system, they support number we give you only will connect you to one of three places, one in Salt Lake City, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona; and Ottawa, Ontario Canada. (Yes I do live in one of those cities.)

yeah, if you want horrible technical support and an unreliable laptop, go for a dell...dell figured out some scheme to make more money because their business was becoming so bad, they needed another source of income, so they decided that all dells now must be sent back to dell in order for you to UPGRADE ANYTHING because dells now are only compatible with DELL ONLY parts.... im not saying anything further, but if you can get one, HPs are great and Sonys are pretty top notch...none of those are as top notch as Macs but they are the best you can do if you cannot afford a Mac...HPs are reliable and offer a wide variety of specs for you to choose from and Sony laptops are expensive, but reliable as well...i still am a Mac fan, but those are the other two that i favor second most

Not really, crapy support, they want you to pay for tech support after six months! Used to be a year.

My son ordered one but changed to HP, three year support for free.

Consider this: Buy cheap, Get CHEAP.

Good luck with what ever you buy.

PS
Stay away from ACRE they are POS.
