Does the fact that the marjority of the U.S. Armenian population is in her district in California have anything to do with this whole Turkey thing?

This isn't new. The US has been pushing Turkey to acknowledge its crimes against Armenians just as it has been pushing Japan to acknowledge its crimes against Chinese and Koreans, and the Chinese to acknowledge their crimes against Tibetans. Used to be the administration that took the lead on these issues, but now that they have abandoned any pretense of concern over human rights, it's up to Congress to remind the world what Americans stand for. Good for them.

I'm astonished that nobody has disputed the assumption of the question yet. Nancy Pelosi's district is in San Francisco, which does NOT have the majority of the Armenian population in the U.S. By far the largest Armenian community is in one part of the Los Angeles area, in particular Glendale. Glendale alone has 80,000 Armenians. This is the third largest population in the world, after Armenia itself and Moscow. The representative of the congressional district that includes Glendale, Adam Schiff, is the one who proposed the resolution. After Glendale, the largest Armenian communities in the country are Fresno, California and Watertown, Mass. I'm not Armenian and I don't know for sure how San Francisco stacks up relative to the rest of the state. I did grow up in the San Francisco Bay area and was never aware of the Armenian presence like where I live in Southern California. Certainly San Francisco is known for its Asian community at more than 30%, and its large gay community (which I assume doesn't have a particularly large Armenian component). As I say, I've never heard that San Francisco has a particularly large Armenian community--perhaps an Armenian can fill us in.

As for this being a partisan issue, it's not. In 2005 we were at war in Iraq, using Turkish naval bases and so on, and still the committee voted 40-7 in favor of the resolution. Obviously it was a bipartisan vote. This year, for the 27-21 vote, 8 Democrats voted against and 8 Republicans voted for. The resolution has come up regularly over the last 25 years and the Democrats are not trying to make trouble for Bush--he's the one who turned it into a partisan issue by putting pressure on Republicans.

Nancy Pelosi is doing what she thinks is morally right.

While we're on the nonpartisan aspect of this--a quote:

From George W. Bush 2/19/00:

"The twentieth century was marred by wars of unimaginable brutality, mass murder and genocide. History records that the Armenians were the first people of the last century to have endured these cruelties. The Armenians were subjected to a genocidal campaign that defies comprehension and commands all decent people to remember and acknowledge the facts and lessons of an awful crime in a century of bloody crimes against humanity. If elected President, I would ensure that our nation properly recognizes the tragic suffering of the Armenian people."

You know that term representative?
I would certainly assume that she is representing the opinions and wishes of the people of her district.
"This whole Turkey thing" as you so dismissively put it, is genocide. Do we do the right, honest and true thing, and call it what it is,or do we, yet again kiss another country's posterior and lie and pretend it never happened?
For years now the Armenians have been fighting for the recognition of their history, lest it be buried and forgotten. They have a right to that. As to the timing, if we had recognized it before we wouldn't be in a jam as far as annoying Turkey now. But if not now...when?
When is the right time to set the story straight?
When is the right time to decry genocide?

Ok, we now have had our amusing. Let's no longer be little morons just like the Democrats and obsess approximately a misstatement. We all realize she intended 500 thousand, no longer million. Of path, we will have to appreciate and factor out to the Democrat precise believers that Nancy was once carrying out a such a lot blatant and fake worry-mongering. "Pass our Porkapalooza correct now or we are all going to DIE. Aaaaaaaaaaaah!" One might wish for a lot bigger coming from the character third in line to the Presidency.

Pelosi is attempting to anger the Turks into withdrawing it's logistical support for the Iraq war. She couldn't care less about the Armenians. She's only interested in creating animosity between the Turks and the US, in hopes of furthering the democrat cause. She has deeply invested in the US loss of the war on terror.

As a former Dem, I hang my head in shame and disbelief as I watch the Dem's cow-tow to the Armenian lobby that's wants to rehash the history that happened over 90 years ago. My dad spend over 4 years in a Japaneses interment camp, working in the coal mines for a private Japanese company as a slave, but the USA government took away his right to sue as a concession to the peace treaty with Japan, and he was a USA citizens and we made peace with it, as should the Armenians who were not even Americans at the time.

It was a genocide, and the Turks should take responsibility for it, not try to deny it. The Germans admitted responsibility for the Holocaust and they are accepted in the international community. Turkey has a reputation for injustice and genocide. Time to clean up your act Turkey!

She is co-sponsoring a Bill recoginizing the FACT that this genocide happened - along with many Republicans.

Seems pretty bi-partisan to me!
Why didn't you ask "What the heck are they doing"?

The Iranian president says the Holocost never happened - is that important or not? Same thing isn't it?
Which side are you on - truth or lies?

Why don't you write your Republican reps and let them know how displeased you are that the 2-party's are working together on this issue.

The most famous Turkish citizen Orhan Pamuk, (nobel peace prize winner) just stated that the US should recognize the Armenian Genocide and Turkey has no freedom of speech. He was jailed by Turkey for his opinions.

http://www.panorama.am/en/society/2007/1...

The Armenian genocide is the "death of 1.5 million Christians killed by Muslims in a Jihad"

Did you know Freedom of Speech is outlawed in Turkey? Did you know Turkey is still doing honor killings?

Why does the United States support a country that does that? Just because of misle bases?

Did you knows that the resolution has been coming up for the past 25 years and everytime it has come up the US government says "this is not the right time" just like they are now. During Clintons presidency the same thing was being said that is being said now and there was no war.
So when will it be the right time? Never is the right answer.

Armenian-Americans have been trying for the past 25 years for the US to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
Its recognized in countless other countries like Canada, Italy, Greece, France, Poland, etc.

it happened 90 years after the fact, did you know alot of the survivors of that genocide are still alive? They were children when the Turks raped their mothers and fathers, chopped their aunts and uncles into pieces, hung their brothers and sisters on crosses and then burned them alive. Leaving the survivors as orphans who alot wound up in orphanges in America in 1915.
Their still alive, don't you think the USA should recognize what happened to them while their still alive?

Did you know Turkey never admitted they did the genocide, they lie and say it never happened, Turks claim Both Armenians and Greeks comitted a Genocide to them in 1915, they hold rallies in streets of America including outside the White House stating this. You can see the videos and photos Here:

Did you know its against the law in turkey for anyone to say the Armenian Genoicde happened. Its Penal Code 301 in Turkey. The punishment is jail. Famous journalist Hrant DInk was sent to jail for saying the Armenian Genocide happened then he was killed, his son has to serve 1 year in jail for saying the Armenian Genocide happened/

In turkey their history books are re-written stating the Armenian Genocide never happened. The country is teaching their people lies which is causing a dangerous situation..

Should the USA deny the Sept 11 attacks happened because Osama Bin Laden makes a good ally?

Don't you think its ironic the USA is allies with a country Turkey who is Muslim and comitted a JIHAD (genocide) to Christians -the Armenians who deny it ever even happened?

If your grandfather was alive and told you how his father was hung on a cross burned alive, his mother was raped and killed, his uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters were all raped, chopped into pieces, tortured in front of him by muslims you want the people who did it to at least say sorry, right? Not re-write history books and say your grandfathers family killed and raped them?

My Grandfather is 95 years old, all he wants in life is to see the USA recognize this before he dies. Hes lived in this country since he was a littly boy. He payed his taxes, is a successful business man who is a good American citizen
