Well I was having this same conversation last night as regards to people from Panama and Giuana, To throughly understand race you have to study history and science.
All the races that we see today originate from a time when the contenants were one. When the continants broke up it created the basic races due to the position of the continent in realtion to the some.(If your continent was closer to the equator than your skin became darker and grew a natural immunity to the sun and its effects on the body.
Once shipping and large scale boats became widely availbale and popular, many people chose to leave and migrate to other areas. While in these area of course there were inter-racial relationships. Most of the Nationalities in the islands are made up of these people and so may have traitsthat are considered black, white, hispanic. Like Puerto Ricans they range in color form white to the darkest black

Everyone is black... Except white peoples. Sounds vague but if your skin is dark, logic tells you.
I also reject the theory of race. That garbage didn't exist before racists created it. There are no races. Human beings are simply diverse in appearance for obvious reasons. The original humans were black. No one descends from primates. Humans were created.

Melanesia was named that by a Frenchman in the early 19th century, because he thought the islanders looked "black". As opposed to the Micronesians and Polynesians, who didn't.
His divisions grouped together people with completely different genetic histories, and made distinctions that didn't exist. But he thought it sounded good.
So yeah, it's understandable to think they look black.

To chariese b -
The continents existed in essentially their current configuration long before humans evolved. Pangaea started breaking up about 180 million years ago, and the last step in the current configuration happened about 35 million years ago. The first homo sapiens appeared in Africa about 200,000 years ago.

I'm from North Africa, Tunisia, and we are white. The people on Melanesia seem to me to have olive or tan skim, but not black. Their features are mot Africans, they seem like Ethiopian or Yemenite features.

Well, race is a physical appearance, so yes, I would say they are Black. Just like there are Black or White Hispanics..
For some reason people don't know the difference between Race and Ethnicity like this asker who sent me an email about it. So let me explain a bit..
Race- the color of ones skin, your appearance. (i.e. black, white, etc)
Ethnicity-your actual biological background (i.e. african american, brazillian, Irish, etc)
