Curious about their "checked baggage service". Does this include checking your luggage so you can go sightseeing?

Never been before so wondering if they have this (or even storage lockers)? Thanks!

The AMTRAK station in St. Louis offers Checked Baggage Service every day from 3:30 AM until 11:59 PM. When AMTRAK says "Checked Baggage Service", what they mean is 1) if you are loading any bags into the baggage car, they will accept them from you when you check in, place them in a holding area, and load them onto your train; and 2) When your train arrives at its destination, they will unload the bags from the baggage car and return them to their owners. In larger stations this may have the luggage carousels like they do in airports; in smaller stations the distribution may take place in the area where the train is loaded. (But not way down at the baggage car, they will put the bags on a truck and bring them up to the station.)

I do not know if the St. Louis station has storage lockers -- they are a pretty good sized station, so that could be a safe guess. But it is still a GUESS. You can work around it, though:

Let's say your train departs at 1:00 PM. Go to the train station VERY early, and check in. The ticket agent will put a sticker on your bag showing where it is heading and place it in the storage area. IT IS SAFE HERE. NO MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC CAN ACCESS YOUR BAGS IN THE STORAGE AREA. Now with your bags already checked in, go sightseeing. Keep an eye on the time, and get back to the train station before it departs! If you don't, you bags may mail you a postcard!

You can carry on some luggage on the train, and that's what I do. I've traveled on a train so many times, I can get everything I need into a medium sized backpack. So I just carry mine on and place it under my seat. That way, I don't even have to worry about baggage. If you can get your stuff down to a manageable amount, you might want to try that.

You can check in your luggage early and then go sight seeing. I dont remember seeing any lockers but then again I wasnt looking for any. Just make sure that you get back in time to catch your train or your luggage will travel to your destination without you.
