Average lifespans for Syrian hamsters are only 18 months to 3 years. Unfortunately, your guy is probably just reaching the end of his normal lifespan. He's an old guy! Hopefully, you have given him a happy, healthy life with much love and attention. The best thing you can do now is to keep him warm and as comfortable as possible. If he continues to not eat or drink and doesn't die, the kindest thing would be to take him to the vet to be put to sleep. Dehydration is a horrible way to die, and he does not deserve that. More than likely, a vet can't really do anything to save him at this point. It's just his time. Keep him warm and comfortable, let him go in peace, then cherish his memory. Clean the cage very well using Clorox Cleanup, then rinse it well. Store it away a few weeks, then after you have had time to grieve, consider contacting a rescue group to adopt a hamster that needs a good home where it will be loved and cared for the rest of its life.
