I have a small one I got at Sears about 12 years ago and it works fine and I defrost it about once a year but wondering if it will go bad and I will lose the food. I've heard of keeping big bags of ice in them for that. Is that the best thing to do if you don't think it will last much longer?

Keeping bags of ice in the freezer is a good idea. Two reasons. It keeps the air space filled so the unit does not go on and off as often. It can also be used to fill coolers should it go out. There is really no way to predict if or when a unit will go out.

I bought one at Lowe's about 20 years ago and it's still going strong. Our son has it now, we had to buy a big standup type.

Just because you buy a new one there is no warranty saying it will run trouble free for 12 years.I would run it forever.
