Yes, you can! The last I knew, a person can't buy alcohol, cigs, magazines, newspapers, hygiene products, paper products, or cleaning products with food stamps. A few other things may apply because grocery stores carry so much more than they ever used to.
*So many so called experts here on Food Stamps who are dead wrong. Tawn...Why so nasty? That's neither nice nor necessary. People on FS are NOT losers. Watch what you say because it could be you some day. Never say never!!!!

When you walk a mile in someone else's shoes, you can judge them. Please don't worry about people that are lifeless enough to hide behind a computer screen and ridicule others.
The reality is this: food stamps are handled on a state-to-state basis, so, the "rules" regarding what can and can't be purchased varies. In WIsconsin, yes, you can purchase a birthday cake, and, food stamps will also cover the tax on any food that you purchase. The only things that can't be bought are ready-to-eat food from the deli. I know there are other states where you have to pay taxes on unhealthy food. It depends on where you are. I would call the store where I am going to buy it and ask them.
Best wishes~

Too many holes in the system. A responsible person who takes food stamps and buy staples and necessities enough to prepare food for their family each month. Nothing wrong with purchasing flour, sugar, eggs, and oil, all the ingredients for a cake. If money is going to be taken out of my hardearned paycheck each month, then I do believe I should have a say so about what food stamps are used for. No, a premade cake or cans of Red Bull are not wise purchases and do not reflect the true intent of the food stamp program.

Yes! Yes! Yes! The only thing you can't buy as far as "food" is cooked food like chicken already prepared but again it all depends on the store itself. Sometimes I go to shoprite and I can get teh prepared food paid for by my fs card and then there is another store that I can't but mostly all teh stores do accept FS for B/day cakes! Don't listen to these fools, they don't know what it is to struggle. I just bought my daughter's cake last week 10/13 cus it was her 10th b-day and i to work but just don't make enough at this time. Same scenerio but i only get $177 for me and 2 kids which I still come out of pocket to buy food. So have fun at your Party with your family!!!!

Ignore The Insults! Your A Single Mom With A Job That In Itself Is Inspirational! Anyway With Foodtstamps:
You can buy any food item except for food that is sold ready-to-eat, prepared like restaurant food.
You can buy seeds or plants that you will grow to produce food for your household.
You cannot buy things like liquor, cigarettes, vitamins or medicines, pet foods, soap, cosmetics, laundry products, or paper goods.
If you are elderly or disabled, you can use your food stamps to pay for approved home-delivered meals such as Meals on Wheels, or for meals at senior housing, lunch sites, or other group meals.
People in drug/alcohol treatment programs, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women, and certain other group living situations can use food stamps to pay for their meals.
Hope This Helps XOX

At some stores you can and some you can't, just discreetly ask the cashier when you go in. When I cashiered at a certain place deli and bakery food wasn't allowed....but at my local grocery store I can.

Of course you can; it's food! And as for the rude comments, you know they will always be here, just ignore them, and don't feel you have to explain or justify anything.

I don't see why not. It's kinda sad when you're using money that's there to feed you for a b-day cake. Why not buy the ingredients and make one yourself. Then you just saved about $10-$15.
I saw a sticker yesterday that said "Keep working, millions on welfare depend on you"
