Being a conservative or liberal does not mean you have to be anything. I have some very conservative views about some issues. Some very liberal views about others. I am pretty much middle of the road on a lot of things.

Why do we feel it is necessary to label people and then attach a sweeping (and most of the time incorrect) stereotype to them?

Terminology can be so confusing, especially when the media trains us in Political Science. Political Science is a social science that is on par with Sociology, psychology and economics. It studies and can establish predictable trends in human behavior in the combined interactions of Politics, Economics and Social behavior . It is essential to understand the criteria for the terms used.
The Democrats are NOT Liberals, they fit all the criteria of neo-marxists.
The Republicans are NOT Conservatives, they fit the criteria of Liberals.
The Taliban fit the criteria of Conservatives. So, Yes, one has to be socially conservative among conservatives or they will kill you.

Absolutely not. In fact, being a conservative generally means you do not think that government has any business legislating social policy unless necessary for the proper order of society. Most social conservative/religious right conservatives want to legislate morality which is ultimately averse to conservative principles.

No. But you do have to be a conservative of some kind(social, fiscal, whatnot) to be called a conservative.

Well then you are thinking of Libertarians, fiscally conservative but socially liberal, though I hate saying liberal since it is an uglier word than conservative
