My wife is 18 weeks, we had an ultrasound and the doctor could not find the babies kidneys, but did find the bladder. Evrything else turned out good with no defect or anything else. The baby was very active. We are going for a high tech ultrasound in a couple weeks. What are the possibilities that the doctor overlooked the kidneys on his machine which is just a normal ultrasound machine? Has anyone else been there?

I would wait until after the high tech ultrasound before you start to worry. The ultrasounds in the doctors office are not always that great, and the techs who will look at it at the hospital are also usually better trained to read the ultrasound. The same thing happened to me when I was pregnant with my daughter and the ultrasound at the hospital came back that everything was just fine. And if there is a problem then just know that you are catching it early and will be prepared to do whatever necessary to correct it when the baby is born. Good luck.

High Tech ultrasounds are so much better at detecting the small little organs that are in a 18 week old fetus. You seem to have a good doctor who is simply being cautions. I wouldn't worry about it to much.

most doctors are not as good a ultrasound than an Sonographer, someone who specializes in conducting and reading ultrasound machines. It's really not much the machine (unless it is ancinet), but more the skill of the person who conducts the test.

when i went in for my ultrasound the tech had problems finding my baby's kidneys and the left arm. we ended up seeing them after some re-positioning. sometimes the baby just doesn't want to move into the rite position. you will more than likely see them on the next ultrasound. good luck and congrats!!!
