The smell associated with fish comes from the amines and the human nose is capable of detecting less than one part per million concentration. Trimethylamine is also present in some human sweat and urine causing them BO. Fish muscles are rich in amino acids and these are rapidly converted into biogenic amines by bacteria when the fish dies. Fresh fish does not smell too badly.

Maybe it's too dark to see down there? They wouldn't want to bump into rocks and the other fish.
