The county of Middlesex was abolished in 1965 but it still exists as an administrative region.

Not as an official administrative unit. Because of the growth of London, the area was reduced in 1889 and finally abolished in 1965. The Royal Mail also had an area they called Middlesex, but it was much smaller and corresponded to a slightly different area. People still put it as part of the address, but it is not required.

Middlesex does exist - as an administrative area, but not as a county in its own right. I think that's been the situation since reorganisation in 1974.
