I think he wanted to show everyone he was as good apresident as his father.
After 9/11 he said he would fight global terrorism and started with Iraq whose army his father had routed 20 years before. Perhaps he thought he could do better and finish the job by killing Saddan Hussein.
Whatever, by dragging Britain into it he has inspired the children of our immigrants to try to annihalate the rest of us.

The point in general is our foreign policy and how it does usually work.
It is a three four step process:
The step number one is to offer a foreign government to play by our rules. Which Iraqi government complied with our foreign policy in 90's that is why we left Saddam Husein alone.
The step number two kicks in when a foreign government does want to comply with its nation's own interests and does not want to play with our rules, then we offer the president of that country a couple of hundreds millions of dollars and try to bribe them to play on our side and play the american game.
Which Saddam played very successfuly in 90s as well.
Step number three would be to try to assassinate the president of that foreign country and instead of him just bring a pro american official who will do whatever we tell him to do.
We could not assassinate Saddam, because his security was extremely strong.
Then we went to step number four and declared war against Iraq. Very simple process, it has been around since ancient Rome, it has been around from the times of Soviet Union, and US is very successful in using this mechanism to expand its political and economical influence over thirld world countries who dont want to play the american game.
The main reason for the war was because Saddam said enough is enough, our oil should be used for our nation. Americans, you get the hell out of here. Why he did not say that in nineties I am not sure. And our big corporations who spent all kinds of money for Mr. Bush to become the president of this country, pushed the button. It is the big corporations who have the best interest in the war against Iraq. Big money controls this country and not those soldiers who die or getting wounded everyday.
And Saddam tried protecting his natural resource but could not and that is why he lost his life.
If someone tells you about 911 being the reason for American invasion in Iraq, just laugh at them.
What was the reason in 90 s then. There was no 911. What was then Vietnam all about, How about Afghanistan.
Bottom line. To boost our economy here, big corporations need more and more resources and markets to expand their goods and services. Otherwise this country will face the same depression that it had faced in twenties.
Sorry for being so long.

1. To plant a democracy in the center of the Middle East, which would hopefully act as a catalyst for change in the bordering nations. (The assumption being that democracies do not provide national support to terrorist organizations).

2. To create a military presence bordering many Middle Eastern nations in the hopes this would deter their terrorist-supporting activities.

3. To topple Hussein before he could develop WMD.

4. (guessing) Personal vengeance by the president for Hussein's taunting of his father and our nation. (Guess, it's okay to enjoy your work if you have other primary reasons for engaging in it.)

5. To appease the Muslims in the region, many of whom were afraid of Hussein.

6. Stabilize oil prices. (Maybe this was a secondary reason.)

7. To act as a "fly trap" for terrorists. Terrorists come into Iraq, face our soldiers and die. (Rather than these same terrorists facing our citizens back home).

Now, not sure how much of the above actually worked or might succeed in the future. But, the attempts were noble.

The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ever since the days of Desert Storm when George H.W. Bush was ridiculed, criticized and humiliated for 'not finishing the job' and ousting Hussein at that time;
The giant U.S. military-industrial complex needed to boost its profits after years of peace (something Eisenhower warned us about more than fifty years ago);
George W. Bush was selected to be President so that he could attack Iraq and make all his oil buddies millionaires.

There is no other 'point' to Iraq. We are there solely for OIL and WAR PROFITEERING.

675,000 Iraqis and 3,900 U.S. soldiers have died so that a handful of wealthy elitists, industrialists and power brokers can become wealthier and more powerful.

Bush lied to Congress, hoodwinked the American people and conned our valiant U.S. troops into believing there was honorable purpose in attacking another sovereign nation that in now way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States. We will not leave Iraq for decades - perhaps generations - until we've sucked all that OIL from Iraq's sands.

THAT'S WHY Bush insists on the number-one, non-military 'benchmark' being passed by the Iraqi Parliament which surrenders two-thirds of its oil fields to private, foreign oil companies, literally allowing them to STEAL Iraq's most valuable economic resource;

THAT'S WHY we're building the largest embassy in the world on a 104-acre site in downtown Baghdad overlooking the 'new' Iraqi puppet government installed by the Bush administration;

THAT'S WHY Halliburton is building fourteen (yes - 14!) new permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq.

We will be there for as long as we've been in Japan, Korea or Germany - to protect our "interests" OIL.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their war-mongering friends deserve a special OIL-soaked, blood-stained corner of Hell where they can rot for eternity, along with:
535 members of the most incompetent, contemptible, evil, cowardly, arrogant, corrupt Republican-led Congress in U.S. history that stood by and allowed Bush to run rip shod over our Constitution
-and-
535 members of the most incompetent, contemptible, evil, cowardly, arrogant, corrupt Democratic-led Congress in U.S. history that promised to end this insane 'war' if elected, and - to date - has done absolutely nothing to keep that promise.
May GOD DAMN them ALL!!! -RKO- 10/16/07

To nurture a puppet government in Iraq that would later favorably cater to America's addiction to oil.

Oil is a powerful foreign policy weapon these days. Those who control it makes the most in world affairs. How much more when oil reserves have gone too low.
