The engine mounts may need replacement. You need to deduct whether they've gone bad or if you've got an engine misfire causing it to shake heavily at idle.

If the mounts are bad, no biggie....they're cheap and usually fairly simple to replace if you've got a decent floor jack and a bit of mechanical skill. If you have a strong engine miss you could be looking at anything from a general tune-up to 1 of 100's of other possibilities.

You can test the mounts by opening the hood, grabbing a friend, putting the car in drive while applying the brake. Lightly press on the accelerator....if your friend (or you) sees the engine moving back and forth at a decent rate the mounts are bad. Inspect them (you could have 2, you might have 4, depends on your vehicle) and determine which are worn.

If the engine doesn't rock back and forth while performing this test there's a good chance you've got a substantial miss. Many vehicles will only miss heavily at idle and appear to be fine when accelerating, etc. Usually an indication it's time for a tune-up.

Hope this helps!

sounds to me like motor mounts have given up the ghost. any mechanic can replace them and actually for as labor intensive as the job is their not that expensive realitivly speaking. just get estimates and don't forget about the reputable transmission shops in your area... why because they also do other work and motor mounts are something that they see and work with and around every day so their are very familliar with them which gives them an edge of sorts when it comes to saving labor hours on the job.

State the year, make and model.

Is it a fuel injected car? Did this start recently? You may not be firing on all cylinders. We need more info...
