There is the pronounced noise of water running that seems to be coming from behind the same wall where the faucet and head are located in my shower stall. I've removed the faceplate of the faucet and all seems dry within the limited area I could examine. There are no visible leaks. The noise runs all the time whether or not any of the home's faucets are on.
Thanks for any advice.

EDIT: Water meter only runs when something is on.
Is there a "cartridge" within the faucet assembly that could bo old or bad and causing the noise?

EDIT #: Just left Home Depot where I also stumped them. Had 5 guys at one point asking questions. One a master plumber said he wished company policy allowed him, he wanted to come and listen just out of curiosity - no charge.
This is a stumper. Thanks for all your help so far - all included.

Edit #4: OK to get caught up. Water heater is opposite side of house in a closet off garage. Noise in question is in Master Bth shower stall.
There is no re-circ (one of the HD guys asked that)
Leak Detectors has been recommended. I'd rather not spend the $$, if situation is a "ghost," another HD theory, and also what Cowboy (above) is suggesting.
The volume of the noise would seem to rule out a pinhole. It is fairly loud when you are near the stall. Also, this has been going on for several weeks with no sign of water anywhere.

Check your water meter. Is it constantly turning even when you are not drawing any water? If yes, then you have a leak or open water point somewhere.
Another thing you can try is to shut off the main incoming water valve to your house and see if the noise continues. If it does, then it is not your water that you hear.

One of your supply lines behind the shower has a leak.
We had a problem almost the same, our water heater was located outside but at the head of the bed in our bedroom I could hear a water leak, but could found or see any leaks.. I had to take the water heater out and open the wall behind the water heater space, found a copper pipe with a pin hole in it, that was our problem. Depending on the location of your shower should give you the answer of do it yourself or have someone come in and make the repairs. Good Luck

If possible, go under the house and look for water. The space between the walls could be causing an "echo" of water leaking and not be visible where you are looking. Even though your meter is showing no water going through it, it may still be a small leak. I know the small triangle on the meter "should" be moving if even a small amount of water is passing, but it doesn't always. Mine is the same way.

I was called out, late at night to a ladies home for a noise like you describe. When everything was off you could hear a "hiss" in the area of the toilet. I turned everyhting off, we marked the water level in the toilet bowl, the back of the toilet. We flushed the toilet over and over.
She had me out five times in one night. I called the agent and told him this was costing him $48.00 a call and I can't find anything. He called a union plumber. they charged him over $300.00 for what they did, sit and look, listen, didn' t do anything more then what I did.
I was called back the next day. I told the agent that I could take out the wall if he thought the water was running behind it. I thought the noise was "telegraphing noise from the street, from traffic" going by. He thought I was crazy.
I asked him to give me another idea, he couldn't.
The noise was never found. I worked on the house from time to time and, the noise was always there, a strange hissing noise in the bathroom like a water leak. Only when it was quiet like at night.

Maybe a dumb question, but:
Does your home have a hot water circulating pump?
If the hot water is instantly hot, it probably does.
Such a system constantly moves the hot water,
and with some roughness in the pipe could be
the source of your noise.

If you follow the advice other have given you, you will probably get it fixed. Sounds like you do have a leak
Is there a water source above your shower..like a upstairs bathroom? If so look there.
So much water could cause wood rot and mold. Could end up with structural damage and healthhazard.
Regards.

Cut the wall behind the shower, from bottom to about 5ft up and 16 in. Wide .the 16 is center stud to stud. Careful not to cut the pipes, the drywall is only 1/2 in. thick. Find the leak; might just be the neck of the shower head needs new plumbers tape. Either way wall needs to be opened to find how much damage occurred. Rent or buy a floor blower and put it to work. Drywall and parts are cheap, its the labor that's gonna kill. If nothing else save a lot of labor cost and have it opened up and find the leaked before the plumber shows up. Good luck, Robert
