Sue him for malpractice.

Get another lawyer and sue him for malpractice. You can make a complaint to the ethics board in your state, but they'll just punish the lawyer and won't require him to pay you back.

As your lawyer has failed to do his own job, you might try and find another lawyer, one with renowned and firm ferocious clutches, and pay his office all they want, so that he may try to squeeze more of the satisfaction of your own sacrosanct rights out of that deleterious lawyer of yours.

Or you might try and live with the ugly losses, and peacefully make a pause, and so tenderly slick your own wounds, and forget revenge, and so try and find some brighter serenity in some moments of silence and in the thoughtless contemplation of some more glowing and more promising aspects of your own life.

Good luck!

Document, document, document. Start by putting in writing that you want your money back. You should also review any retainer you may have signed with him regarding expenses and fees. Consider consulting with another attorney. If the lawyer is part of a larger firm, consider talking with their supervising attorney (unless they are a sole practioner and work for themselves).

If it is provable that he charged for work that was fraudulent and it, in turn cost you to miss work, you can check with the Bar Association. They are the branch that takes care of attorney complaints.
