I would scrap our political system and revert back to a nation by and for the people.

Things are actually pretty good but some tinkering ... find a fairer tax system - a flat tax without all the loopholes would be a start. Pay the military more - it's shameful when mercenaries get 4 or 5 times the money as our professional soldiers. Scrap junk like NEA, useless farm subsidies for not planting, allow and practice the line item veto (do we really need to spend $139,000 for maple research in Vermont, $591,000 for tristate peanut research in Alabama or $50,000 for shiitake mushroom research? Amend the Constitution to dump the Electorial College and have the president elected by popular vote.
And don't start the damn campaigns until January of 2008.
Oh, yeah, and do away with the Designated Hitter...

Wow that's a tough question. As much as this country is the greatest country in the world, I don't think everything is just great. Here are some quick points I think need to be changed:
1. This country was always known as a "melting pot" , meaning so many different cultures melting into one super culture known as Americans, but over the last decade or so, it has become more of a "salad bowl", meaning everyone wants to remain completely autonomous. Being not known as Americans, but African-American, Italian-American, Asian-American, Irish-American etc... , and to confuse the issue even more, everyone wants to speak their own language and not learn English.
2. To go along with #1, English needs to be established as the national language.
3. Our borders need to be locked down and all illegal immigrations stopped, and any illegals currently in the US, sent back to where they came from.
4. Abolish the ACLU. This organization is single-handedly destroying the fabric of this great nation. If they are not stopped soon, the damage may be irreversible.
There are a number of other issues, but these are the top 4 in my book.

1) Impeach the present President. A) Illegal War, Refusing to allow Congressional supbeonas to be honored..list goes on.
2) Secure American borders as stated in the Constitution, we are in a War, and allowing possible terrorist to enter is against America's best interest(possible impeachment offense)
3)Do away with the Patriot Act, which has already been partially declared(and is blatantly opposite of open borders.... Unconstitutional(a possible impeachment offense)
4)Secure housing for those uprooted by Katrina
5)Investigate possible violations of The Geneva Convention(possible impeachment offense).
That is what I would do, and/or change.
just my thoughts....

A critical thinking/logics class would be a requirement for graduation at all schools, public and private.
No closed sessions of congress, that are only open to lobbyists.
Pay raises for elected officials are only to be given by popular vote.
Ban all American flags with "made in China" on the label.
Something just doesn't seem right about supporting a communist economy by buying our flag from them. Or attempting to display your love for America while it waves a "made in communist country" tag right along with it.

No corporate campaign donations. No lobbyists. Limits on the amount of time and money that can be spent on political campaigning. A discard of the two-party system to end pointless partisan bickering. A drastic cut-back on military spending in favor of isolationism. Money to be sent to education, NASA, clean energy programs, more sustainable farming.

i would try to show all political parties that everyone wants the same goals reached, we just have different views on which road gets us there. an example would be gun control: yes, we should have the right to bear arms...but come on, i'm sure even the most right-wing person out there can agree that some people shouldn't have them and its their actions in their past that puts them there.
once we realize this, i think we could focus on solving issues instead of debating them.
