Yahoo and Ask.com are the only engines that even LOOK at the meta keywords tag. Google and MSN ignore it completely.
And the way Yahoo and Ask use it is for "matching" purposes -- not for ranking. No matter what you put in there, it won't help you rank any better. The best way to use the meta keywords tag is for misspellings. If your company name is Maroon Widgets, you might put things like "marroon widgets, marroon wiggets, maroon wigets", etc., in your meta keywords tag.
Hope this helps.

Many of the SEO advice columns I *used to* see recommended a max of around ten or so...or around 150 some characters, *very* carefully chosen! (Like, you have to really think, beforehand, what words YOU'd expect someone to type to have YOUR website pop up! Think hard! Think about someone who has absolutely no idea your website exists! It's effective to use plurals, so the singular form is "implied"!)
But lately, and I'm sort of puzzled by it: I've seen on a FEW webmaster forums of which I'm a member, a hint that at least SOME search engines ignore meta keywords...Though note, they don't ignore page titles and meta descriptions and page content of course! I don't know if it's true, but just to be safe, I'm leaving mine in there!

Well, no need for extra data.
You know that SE store data and sure SE database has limited fields so the extra keywords will not be useful.
about the higher ranking, well that Depend on the SE you do the optimization for , for example google Give much care for metatags specially the keywords, but MSN give much care for the keywords.
each search engine has it own algorithm, each one has its own point of view, if you want top ranking and you have no experience in SEO , just give care to :
1- Unique data.
2- Backlinks

25 words or less. No point using more (ineffective). Don't use competitor names - no point. Don't hide anything from search engines or users - you'll get banned.
