I have a very shady front yard, and want to replace the evergreen bushes in front of my house. The problem is, there are two very large trees in the way, so I need something less than 8 feet high, at most, that will grow well in shade. I'm in Zone 5, and have clay soil. I know that's going to have to be one hardy bush, but can anyone help?

Many shrubs will grow in dense shade, as well as in clay, in zone 5. Some of them may be familiar, and some are quite lovely, unusual plants.

Try looking up a few of these for their sizes and shapes. Some of them can be pruned if their mature size is larger than you want. Keep in mind that most mature sizes listed in descriptions are 10 years or more.

Itea virginica = Summersweet
Hydrangea quercifolia = Oakleaf Hydrangea
Lonicera fragrantissima = Winter Honeysuckle
Euonymus fortunei = Wintercreeper
Taxus x media = Yew
Cornus sericea = Red-twig Dogwood
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi = Bearberry
Berberis thunbergii = Barberry

When you search for these, be sure to use the Latin name (on the left). It will get you more reliable results.

Good luck!

Aucuba is a good evergreen bush and has interesting leaves (green and splash of yellow). It is hardy and loves the shade.

Look at the holly varieties...hydrangeas, and dwarf evergreens...your best bet would be to go to a local nursery and speak with someone about what grows best in your zone and climate. Most will be happy to impart their knowledge to you...and help you achieve a yard others will envy...and it will be the best "advertisement" they can get!

Others have suggested some stable shrubs that tolerate color. even though it rather is complicated to verify which ones thrive in deep color - seems no person rather lists them. you will might desire to benefit hardiness on your area, yet in my adventure the shrubs which take deep color the ideal are Aucuba, Mahonia, Fatsia, and Arboricola. they are in a position to tolerate easy color, and likewise the deep color that maximum different flowers can't.
