.99 of 1 gb is pretty close to a gigabyte of something - but what - memory or hard drive?

Personally, I would not buy a laptop from a pawn shop. If anything goes wrong, where will you go for help and support? You might be better off searching Dell or HP for refurbished laptops. When they show up, they are not available for long because they get snatched up quickly. You have to check their websites daily, if not a couple of times a day. Case in point, my sister-in-law was persistent at searching for a refurbished and hit it just right. She got a laptop with up-to-date software, lot of memory, HD, at a very good price.

I am not sure what do you mean by "system tab". It might be the memory .99 GB means the laptops have 1GB of RAM installed (sometimes Windows report the memory in close approximately with the real value). Generally speaking the GB term is used in memory,

.99gb means 99 giga bytes, it refers to how much memory is left in the laptop.... 99 giga bytes is pretty much.
