I'll be the first to admit, soaps are cheesy. I can tolerate about 5 minutes worth on a case-by-case basis. But if you put aside the corny music, the amateur angles, and the cyclical storylines, what makes the typical soap actor so bad?
Generally speaking, what makes the popular film star so much better? Examples being George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson (pre-2000). These are actors who generally don't change much about themselves for roles they take on.
I'm asking this because I simply do not know. Thank you

Interesting. I am pretty sure all three of the persons you named were in soap opera at some point early in their career, Gibson in Austrailia and Pitt and Clooney in the US.
Soap Opera is where a lot of great actors cut there teath and that is why they seem so green, because; they are.
But as for cheesy that has to do with the scripts and the music and the camera work that Soap Operas employ to maximize close ups and give it a harlequine romance feel.
It is not necessarily the actor's fault.

Generally Soaps are filmed in one or two takes. They do not get the change to get it right. Movies will use a hundred takes if that is what it takes to get it right. If you took the Soap stars and put them into a regular movie they would be just as good as your movie stars.

Soap Opera stars are mediocre actors. They're not paid NEARLY as much as regular stars, and a lot of times, Soap Operas are just a starting-off point for good actors.

In the words of flavor flav soap stars are just way too "dramatical "unlike movie stars they are just more realistic!
