Rounded tips are making a comeback away from the squared tips. I have always kept mine rounded just my preference, and it should be whatever style you enjoy on yourself.
As for colors deeper shades are popular, deep blues, and lavender, along with brownish tones and deeper shades of pink.
Right now I am wearing a shade called Light my Sapphire by OPI it is a deep blue, and looks great.

Actually short rounded nails are still in style from last year. Whereas last year dark red/black was the color, now it is deep purple.
If you must do longer nails, just stick to a french manicure. And that reverse manicure the girl above showed, ugly!!

First of all, define "very long," as anything more than a half-inch past the tips of your fingers is never in style and is generally considered sort of hoochie-ish. You should file them flat, as they look classy that way, and they're easier to work with, too. Go for either a French manicure or a nice dark red, like a burgundy.

i'm slightly a variety follower, and acording to many magazines the recent element this season is amazing formidable hues, like neon green, crimson, blue, yellow, or maybe orange. OPI (a huge nail polish corporation) have even released a sparkling line of amazing, chilly hues in uncomplicated terms for this summer time.

I'd trim them a tiny bit and square them off. Then apply a load of very dark purple polish (or even navy I read in Vogue the other day).
Apparently Chanel's bestseller at the moment is Tulip Noir, very dark purple. Chanel are known for selling on trend colours, Rouge Noir was huge for a few years (very dark, blood red) after Uma wore it in Pulp Fiction.
I have Tulip Noir on my toenails as we speak. I am a fashion sheep following the herd....

The trend in Europe is reverse manicures in all sorts of colors. I prefer squared and not too long.

Squared nails are always in because they wear better. Branding the nails is in, what I mean by that is to imitate designer brand labels on your nails, black nails with a white c for Channel, etc. VSL initials painted on nails.

The reverse manicure is ugly and I would tell Ashlee Simpson that too....why would you want to follow a trend of someone who isn't even comfortable with her own looks? Be yourself, not what hollywood says is "beautiful" Hollywood is full of insecure actors, singers etc. They think having your bones show and everything from your hair to your toenails being fake is beautiful??? Not so much.

The style is a little shorter and more square with neutral colors or french.
