A typical thesis has a title page, an abstract, a table of contents and a bibliography. Well Stalin is pretty complicated. But you would have to look at his childhood, he was beaten by his father, was a street thug and ran a protection racket in the 20's. Then into his life, his purges, how and why he hated his daughter, is industrialization on the Soviet Union. His mental instability, his starvation of his people because of the way he ran the state. He also had beautiful building built and created a very modern railway (all from slave labor though. So you have a lot to work with.

Stalin was married several times. There is some debate on whether he killed his wives or if they committed suicide.
He was prepared to surrender to Germany two weeks after the execution of Operation Barbarossa. His advisors talked him out of it.
A military purge of the Russian military was conducted at Stalin's orders several years before the outbreak of The Great Patriotic War (as it was known to the Soviets). Most of the seasoned military staff were killed and left the country virtually defenseless.
After World War II ended, Stalin sent nearly one third of the entire population of Russia to gulags for alleged wartime crimes, some of which were whole towns that were simply occupied by the Germans.
He was also ugly and smelled funny.
Edit to Kate - He was born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, in Gori, which is now in the Republic of Georgia, in 1879, but in 1910 adopted the pseudonym Josef Stalin, Staling meaning "a man of steel."

1. He was ridiculously short
2. He wanted to become a priest when he was young.
3. Absolutely ruthless. He was presented a document listing
something like 180 women and children and men that were
in a village that was known to harbor anti-Stalin sentiment.
When asked what they should do with these people Stalin
scribbled across the page "Shoot them all". Needless to
say..it was done.
4. He kept a crystal decanter and glasses (probably for
vodka on his desk. When he was going to 'pass gas'
he'd grab the set and rattle it to mask the sound of him
doing so. What a clever fellow huh?

I think it would be interesting to focus on him changing his name. His original last name was a perfectly good Georgian name, but he changed it to something sounding more Russian.
