new hobby?

Question

i want a new hobby - any ideas? currently into english country dance, bellringing, folk music, reading, singing, enivronment, science (maths particularly)...

you've all made me remember other things i do! like hillwalking, dressmaking...

rosie - that sounds really interesting, i've always wanted to try fencing but didn't know where to start. and the dye/embroidery stuff is great!

stef - ditto with cross stitch - it's quite good fun.

lala - i tried knitting and failed completely. i think it's one of those things that's not for me.

I'm into the SCA which has introduced me to a whole lot of stuff. I have been learning dressmaking, knitting, how to dye with natural dyes, to fingerloop braid, to improve my embroidery, fight using rapier, felting and medieval cookery. You don't sound like you have time for many more hobbies! But I don't either, and pick them up anyway. Life is too exciting to specialise.

Here's a strange idea. If you like math, how about collecting strange math questions and putting them into a book?

Here's an example.

You have a pond. And on that pond is a lilly. The lilly doubles it's size every day. From the time it first appears, till it completely covers the pond is 40 days. How long does it take to cover 1/2 the pond? (answer at bottom and no the answer isn't 20 days like most people think).

I am doing that with trick questions right now. You know the type, If a rooster lays an egg on the top of an A Frame house, which way will the egg roll? (Answer, roosters don't lay eggs).

It's been fun trying to find new ones, so this might be something you would like.

(The correct answer to the question is 39 days. It's easy to figure out if you start working backwards from 40 and divide by .5)

Try coin collecting. It doesn't have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. A box of pennies is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of quarters or half dollars are $500. You don't have to buy the whole box. The bank can pull out whatever amount you like.

Once you get a box, you can go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). You can pick up a coin album and try to fill all the holes (get one for each year) or just search for interesting ones.

The coins that you don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don't search the same coins over and over). Everything you find will have been obtained at face value. You'd be surprised what people have found. Check out these links to see:

Also check your change for interesting finds.

Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, coins with the "S" mintmark - it could be a proof coin etc. There's always the chance that you could find a real treasure!

It's also helpful to buy a red book. It can help you price your coins and will answer many of the questions you may have.

You should ask everyone you know what their hobbies R and if it sounds interesting, ask them all about it & see if you would like it. I like to read books( romance, sifi, as well as school books ) Ride( bikes,[no moterized], horses) go to movies,
