Rena, there are actually more than the three types of dreams you referred to, but I'll confine my answer to them.
Message, prophetic & symbolic are intertwined.
Dreams are most often represented in symbols, imagery & metaphor. The "message" is in these; the message "can" be prophetic.
By prophetic, I don't mean the dream "that comes true," such as, I dreamed my house caught on fire, & it did the next day. I have NEVER seen this to be other than coincidental. Prophetic occurs in recurring dreams sending messages over periods of time that basically are telling us something about our "inner selves," not events.
I was interested in param's answer: "If only someone could CORRECTLY interpret dreams!!!" Someone can. THE DREAMER. With unbiased, leading questions, one who has long researched the complexity of dreams can take the dreamer into the dream, where they (only they) can explore it. Dreams are essential in our lives. Sleep deprivation is serious; for more than the obvious reason, it also causes dream deprivation.
There are those who adamantly declare they never dream. They simply don't "remember." It may take discipline, at the start, to remember ones' dreams. When one first awakens, using an audio cassette recorder is very useful. After pressing record, keep your eye closed to distractions. Then, keep a a dream journal. There are helpful methods on how to, & how not to do this, & I won't digress now. I simply can't stress how important dreams are, & wish I could share with everyone who has an interest in them. Nor can I answer, which do I have often, for reasons already stated.
We, only we, ARE our dreams. Thank you for the question!

It goes symbolic then message then possibly prophetic. Symbolic dreams, once someone learns to interpret them (which most don't even care to do and never will do in their lifetime) are just your brains way of cleaning out the closet. All dreams are symbolic, the symbolism is just an archetypal language. Message dreams come from your own subconscious to give you warning or make commentary. Prophetic dreams, if they happen come from some unknown source (collective unconscious?).

I usually have symbolic dreams. I know this because I often have pretty bizarre dreams (the ones I remember) and when I start to tell someone about them I realize that what I saw and what happened to me in my dream is an allegory for something that is going on in my life or something I saw recently.
I can honestly say I've never had a prophetic dream and don't think I've had a message dream.

Dreams can be of the past, present and the future. The future is usually referred in a dream as premonitions. When you go to sleep it is the soul that never does go to sleep. The soul can go anywhere, to the past, to the present and to the future also known as deja vu in a waking life, recognizing places that you have never been to but at one point and time your soul was already there. This is what your friend had. There are many books out there about spirituality and life after death. If you get a chance to read a few you will know that it is not a co-incidence for these things to happen. It is more like "meant to be" as one would say or being at the right place at the right time, telling the person they are on the right path where they are meant to be, grow, evolve or go through. Good luck and take care.

I have had the first two but if there were any symbolic ones, I failed to recognise them as such. They would require interpretations which I find am incapable of. Some of my dreams had straight story-line which turned out true in time, some sooner than others. I was greatly surprised by a couple of them turning true which I had dismissed as impossible. I am greatly influenced by my dreams regarding a late best friend. They dominate my wakeful state for days together...If only someone could CORRECTLY interpret dreams!!!

I have mostly prophetic dreams.
If I remember my dream one moment before an unpleasant dreamt event is going to happen, I might be able to do something in order to avoid that things happen as I saw them in the dream.
Unfortunately it may be so that I had the dream long before the event came about, and I had forgotten, therefore and most often it is only just after the event has happened that I remember to have dreamt about it. Like most others, I am not endowed with total memory!
I dream of many events, but I never ever dream of my own death. This makes me think that merciful Providence does not tell me of my death in order to spare me from the panic fit that might aggress me when such a final event is about to happen.
But ... now that I have written about this, it might be so that I even end up dreaming of my own death. But I am almost sure that I never will dream the exact date of this final event.

All three. Most of the time they are symbolic, more often than not God speaks to me through dreams, and occasionally the symbolic dreams relate to events about to come.

all three, but most often I thinks Prophetic Dreams, because almost all the dreams that make a little bit sense, and I remember, come true

I'm not sure, the last one told me that there are four kinds of dreams: Message, Prophetic, Symbolic, and Jokes. I hear the fourth kind is getting popular. lol
