lose their fan base after taking them to the series? Being that Colorado sits alone in baseball's dead zone (Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho, Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas), do you think there's a new fan base forming because of their success? Their fans seem crazy just like big market teams. Are they the perfect team to have a new dynasty form; bad division, young, franchise players, they're not named after something that swims in water...?

You are right that there is not much in the way of baseball in the surrounding states. My friend lives in Denver and is a die hard Indians fan. He loves going to watch the Rockies because they are fun. If they keep their core and play hard they could become a long lasting team. Its hard to say though. Success can sometimes go to ones head. Plus if superstars are superstars, they will want more money. Then it is up to ownership to make the right or wrong move.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume or jump to the conclusion that they will form a dynasty. Colorado is experiencing their first taste of playoff success after having only 1 postseason win in the history of their franchise. They are having a great season, but it doesn't mean they will be a dynasty. I would just enjoy this ride and take it for what it is. Look at the last few World Series winners:

2006 - St. Louis Cardinals - missed the playoffs the next year
2005 - Chicago White Sox - missed the playoffs the next year
2004 - Boston Red Sox - swept in first round in playoffs the next year
2003 - Florida Marlins - missed the playoffs the next year
2002 - Anaheim Angels - missed the playoffs the next year

So only the Red Sox made the playoffs the following year after winning the World Series, but got swept by the eventual World Series champion White Sox. And the Red Sox are back again this year so they are the only team with success the last few years but I don't consider the Red Sox last few years a dynasty in the making, so I definately can't consider the Rockies cinderella run a dynasty in the making either.

I think the Rockies have always had a pretty strong fan base. Denver in general is full of sports fans. Maybe part of the strength is because of the surrounding area that you mentioned... the Rockies are the closest team. It's been that way for 15 years. I don't think the amount national attention they're getting is going to change that.

So no... the Rockies will not lose their fan base, at least not significantly.

I think it's going to be a bandwagon situation. Those surrounding the area have probably jumped on and are sudden Rockies fan at the moment. But when the '08 season comes, if the Rockies don't produce like they did this year, they'll lose those new fans. That's what you typically get with a team like that. It's the same way here in Houston. When we finally made it to the World Series two years ago, the fan base magically quadrupled and people who have never talked about the Astros in their life were talking about them like they'd loved them all along.

I don't know about a dynasty either, you are getting ahead of yourself, but I think the people in Denver can keep it a big fan base, the Bronco's (who I can't stand) do, and they are pretty far from other football teams, they are about the same as baseball, because none of those states have NFL teams.

The 2008 Rox are (will be) better off than the '98 or '04 Marlins simply by virtue of not being owned by Wayne Huizenga or Jeff Loria. This won't be a win-and-disassemble team. (They may not win again next year, but it won't be for budget and roster slashing.)
