the 4 seasons were known and agriculture demanded knowledge of when to plant / harvest crops. There was no mcdonalds, if you messed it up you starved.

many early solar calenders have been found (Stonehenge). a small hole, for example, let in a stream of light. each day the light reached a little farther. after 6 months, the light began to retreat, shorter and shorter each day. other stones were used to indicate the extents of the movement. all they knew was that this happened year after year, they didnt necessarly need to know why it happened. thats what religion is for duh!

The motion of the Sun in the sky was only proved to be an illusion caused by the Earth moving a few hundred years ago, although some ancient Greeks had the idea that Earth might go around the Sun much earlier. People have been tracking the motion of the Sun and stars for thousands of years before that.

People marked time by the position of the sun in the sky. This can be seen without any telescope. Even the planets out as far as Saturn can be seen without a telescope. You just need to look at the sky and pay attention to where things are and keep good records. We see the Sun (and planets) moving through the constellations of the zodiac, making one complete circuit around the sky in a year. It is in addition to the daily motion of the Sun and all stars that rise and set once a day. This is the basis for the fortune telling method known as astrology, which is much older than telescopes.
