America is the land of adventurers and pioneers. We have a tradition of violence and individual recognition. Baseball is rather dull for us, but it spotlights individual achievement in a way that seems to compensate for its lack of steady action.

We prefer hockey to soccer because of the hitting.

Soccer is too civilized for american tastes right now, but I predict that in a few more generations, it will get more respect. Its a great game and when so many children are playing it, its bound to become more and more popular as those kids get their kids involved. It just takes time for something like this to catch on.

i can't say for particular. i've got supported soccer via fact that 1971 (Philadelphia Atoms) and am presently in contact with a company attempting to cajole MLS to grant a variety franchise right here. i think of the undertaking is the oversaturated American activities industry. at the same time because it ought to no longer attain the prestige that it enjoys international, i think of it relatively is powerful right here. i do no longer appreciate the aspersions submitted by utilising people who think of our society would not understand or appreciate soccer or the actuality that hence it relatively is not any longer universal right here. i became into travelling on the shore this summer season and there became right into a soccer journey for infants that attracted 9,000 gamers.

Soccer/futbol/whatever is dull, dull, dull. There must be a point to run run run run run run run run run run run run kick run run run run run run run run run run run run.
Repeat.

But I don't see it, & my guess is that most other dumb Americans don't either. We want a game with drama & strategy. That's why NFL football & NBA basketball are so popular. Lots of scoring. The lead changes several times during a game. Plays can be drawn up & executed. In soccer, what do you get? A score of 1-0? Wow. That's exciting.

I think another response hit on a key point also: advertising dollars. If there's no money to be made from selling beer, pizza, airline tickets, etc. to the "fans", it will never get the promotional push needed to become popular in the U.S.

It does but most people in the US don't see it as being as tough as American Football which I think is dumb because I've seen some soccer players get more messed up than some american football players. And for the most part it has caught on here in the US the women's soccer team is awesome, we have a men's team that gets little recognition. In fact, when they were participating in the world cup everyone thought it was the women's soccer team.

it is treated as a kids game... it is what we send our under 10 year old kids to so they can run around in the grass until they can play a more domestic field sport.

also, as with this question, soccer is just confused who it's true audience is here in the US. american football fans don't care about soccer... (only someone confused about "football" would ask football fans why soccer isn't more respected).

btw, we respect soccer. it doesn't mean we need to play it here though.

Americans are very well... American! Your sports are as said before entrenched in your culture and your sports writers don't want them to loose any ground to other sports. As well you would be one the best teams in the world thus increase the popularity IF your best sportsmen didn't end up doing other sports, no one who could be a pro Baseball, or American Football or whatever player is gonna choose to play soccer.

Because there are too many other sports on the landscape unique to America that pull athletes away from soccer, such that unlike other countries, where their best athletes play soccer, ours don't.
