What's it like being stationed at Travis? Is it a good location?

For the most part, work-wise Travis is pretty laid back with a few exceptions such as exercises, inspections, etc.

Location-wise it's wonderful. It's kind of right between San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Jose. Napa and Sonoma are about a 30 minute drive away. If you want to live off-base, the Vacaville and Suisun communities are very nice and pleasant, and not very far from the base, 10-15 minutes.

From what I hear it's one of the best assignments in the US for the air force.

I wasn't actually at Travis but I was at Concord Naval Weapons Station in that area. Travis is nice, there is a lot to do in that area. Sacramento isn't too far to the East and San Francisco is only about an hour and 15 to the West. Suisan Bay, Golden Gate Bridge. There are a lot of attractions around.

Good Luck.

though i am not in the armed services, i have been to the base when my old boyfriend was with the coast guard. And DethNcarnate's description is pretty accurate. The only thing I would say is that if you can live somewhere else besides fairfield, I would. Fairfield is probably one of the most boring places to live. Outside of the mall/movie theater, the base, there's nothing really there. I grew up in the east bay in Walnut Creek, and to me Fairfield was always the town you drove through to get to lake tahoe. Vacaville might be a better option. The great thing is that it is approximately half way between SF & Sac so you are in a versatile location.

It is very windy weather wise, no matter what time of year it is. It is freaking hot in the summer (it was 115 one summer and the freeway buckled in rush hour commute). June - September average is in the 90s. It is fairly mild, but foggy in the winter.

Also, a word about traffic. Highway 80 runs through the middle of town and west bound in the morning and east bound in the afternoon can be a grind. It could take you half an hour or more to drive 10 miles.
