From 'Cryptic' i.e. hard to understand.

Encrypting is changing data from an easy to understand format to one that is hard or impossible. Data may be restored to the original format only if one knows the 'decryption' procedure. The usual intent is security.

E.g. snoitseuq & uvftujpot are simple encryptions of the word 'questions' one is backwards, the other shifted one letter.

An "encrypted" message means that it has been "coded" so as it cannot be read. When received at the other end it is "decoded" so it can be read.

Here is an example:

You order a T shirt on line, price $14.95.
You give your credit card # for payment, #123 546 32
But as you write it it is encrypted to # Å¡x ®z= ^} so it is useless to anyone wanting to steal your credit card number.

The Tshirt company runs this encrpytion through their machine and it comes out #123 546 32 so they can debit your account and send you your shirt.

Encryption as above is only available when you see a padlock at the lower corner of your screen when you are buying that shirt. You know then that it is safe to use this method of purchase. But if you don't trust the system you can always send them a Money Order in advance.

encryption is the process of transforming information to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge, usually referred to as a key. The end result is something that's been encrypted.
