The BSE is just the 30 largest and most active companies in the SENSEX. The BSE reviews the composition of the BSE whenever they think there might be need for a change, and shuffles smaller companies out and larger companies in.

The BSE is listed with around 4700 companies making it the world's biggest stock exchange. As you know it is hard to count all the companies into the sensex, they have selected the companies which has major share in the market and they took that as benchmark to value the market. These companies influence the market and they are the biggies of the market. It is same with NIfty too.. there they are 50 companies influencing Nifty. It is called as NIfty-50.
