I went to the hosptial on Sat night & was told I have a sever outer ear infection in the right side showing signs of starting in the left. They gave me 3 motrin and one morphine pill to remove the pain that night & prescriptions for apo-naproxen 2x a day & Cipro HC drops 3 drops 3x a day for 3 days then down to 3drops 2x a day. I've been taking the meds but I still hurt.

I was supposed to work Sun - Thurs, I've already taken Sun & Mon off, I feel obligated financially to go into work tonight BUT I'm still in so much pain, I can't even sleep, I can't chew food because my jaw on the right is swollen, I'm wearing a hat with lil ear flaps to keep out air. My job is working graveyard shift baking at a donut shop, I go in & out of a freezer all night. My husband said if I'm in pain I shouldn't go but I am torn between financial responsibly and my health. I really don't know what to do.

The night I went to the hospital the Dr gave me a note on the spot & told me to take a few days off, I should add that.

If your in pain you probably shouldn't go. Ear infections hurt really bad. But in the end it's your decision. If you can possibly afford the time off and make ends meet in other ways I would take it off just because your going to be miserable. But if you really cant just do the best you can. Take your meds and try and make it through your shift. But your body needs rest to heal and working midnights isn't going to help that.

Did you have a history of these ear infections prior to starting your current job in the donut shop? I'm thinking you may want to consider always covering your ears upon entering the freezer as this may be the actual cause of your infections.

As far as going to work or not, personally I would but I would make sure that I took all my meds and wear the cap with the ear flap. Bottom line however, this is your call.

First of all you can't get an ear ifection by going into a freezer. It is caused either by a viral or bacterial infection, not cold temps. Don't go to work if you feel that bad. You won't be productive and you will wear yourself down even more. Take your meds and stay at home. Watch Oprah or Montel, or a good movie. If they get mad at you at work find a new job. How much could a donut shop pay anyway?

There really isn't any "torn between financial responsibility and health" it's more . . . . of a comfort issue than health. Your infection is already being treated -- the issue is the pain and discomfort.

You could try putting cotton balls in your ear(s) to help with the air flow, instead of wearing a floppy hat . . . you may also want to consider taking different pain medications (or more than one -- because they work differently). I'd suggest taking maybe . . . tylenol and aleve.

Vitamin C is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication -- I'd pound the vitamin C hard -- because you can't possibly overdose, and it boosts the immune system, too.

Well if it is that bad i really wouldn't go. You can't put a price on your health can you? Also going in and out of the freezer isn't going to help and if anything it will just make things worse. Which will result in you having to take moe time off then you would have done if you hadn't of gone in to start with. Take it easy and once you are feeling better you can always ask to do overtime to make up for the hours you lost if things are that bad. I'm sure your health is more important then money though.

Get a note from your Doctor so you can be excused at work. Like that they won't be able to fire you for taking too many sick days.

If you feel well enough to spend time asking/answering on Yahoo! Answers, then you can probably go to work.
