I'm going to take a stab in the dark, here, and assume you are installing a set of stringers for a new stair case, and you want to know how you can tell which cut is for the tread, and which cut is for the riser!! I hope I'm right. Your question is a bit vague!!

Treads are always, or at least they are supposed to be wider than the riser!

In some cases, the tread cutout goes all the way to the back of the stringer. The nothc for the riser will be shorter, and start about 10 to 12 inches in from the front edge of the stringer, and only go up to the next tread position.

Take the stringer, and standit on one edge. Place a tread in one of the grooves. It should just protrude about an inch in front of the stringer. Now take a riser board and place it in the groove pointing toward what you deem to be the top of the stringer. The riser should finish at the next tread position about 1 1/2 to 2" in from the stringer. now slip another tread into the tread groove. The riser should just touch it. the treads will be very close to parallel.

You will be able to instantly tell is you are going in the right direction.

Just keep playing with it in this manner until the stair takes the proper shape. You will know when the tread is about 8" to 10" from the front of the stringer to the face of the riser. The riser will be approximately 6 1/2" to 7" from the top of one tread to the bottom of the next tread going up.

Once you've determined the direction of the stringers mark an 'X' on the bottom of the stringers so you know which end is up, and which end is down.

Stairs can be a pretty duanting task for someone who does not work with them often!! I've seen pro's get confused!!!

Odd way to spend 5 points; but obviously 1 & 2 are valid answers. An example might include people being on top floors of a High Rise; While others are below; and a major fire breaks out. Some will be racing DOWN; while others are RACING to a roof. That might cause some congestion and possesive attitudes.

Reference 9/11 and consider if anyone was bothering to care.

First stand up and jump! If you continuously move, that is the way down. If you slowed down and return, thats the way up.

lol, they are bi-directional. Escalators can be tricky though.
Edit:
Rawstuff has it I think, if that was the question. go with longer treads, 10 inch is good.
