The history channel, like any other channel, exists to make money. Sensationalist programs are viewed more often than those dealing strictly with facts. More viewers translates into more advertising dollars, and happier, wealthier, executives.
Producers of such programming are happy since their PRODUCT has sold, and they have money.
Witless viewers are happy, having seen some good entertainment and they will be statistically more likely to purchase the advertisers products, so the advertisers are happy.
Astronomers and people who realize BS when they see it are annoyed when they hear about such nonsense, but since they don't really watch the shows, or buy the products, the network really doesn't care.
A program being broadcast on an "educational" channel like HISTORY or TLC is no guarantee of accuracy.

Yeh - I watched this complete bollox on the History Channel last night as well - I haven't laughed so much in years.
The whole thing is a complete load of old tosh put together by people who are trying to jump on the conspiracy and ancinet astronaut bandwagons.
There is no science here whatsoever and no corroborated evidence for the totally unsupported statements that were made in the programme - if it wasn't so funny, it would be outrageous that this could be allowed on public TV masquerading as a "documentary".
The fact of the matter is that the Mayan calendar runs out in 2012 (so what, mine runs out at the end of this year). All the other stuff about cosmic alignments and the Chinese I Ching is just complete garbage.
Nothing will happen - the same as it hasn't happened at all the other so-called apocalyptic dates that we've passed through over the millennia.

12/21/12 - Winter Solstice, on the Mayan calender is represented as 13.0.0.0.0
This is the astronomical full circle, when the alignments of the planets and the sun (in relation to the Solstice) come around a full 360 degrees to where they were about 28000 years ago, in line with the galactic plane. The mayan calendar, technically, isn't supposed to end on that day. It just resets.
At 11:11 universal time on 12/21/12. Irony with numbers, huh?
There is no big end of the world, no comets, no asteroids. Though, 12/21/12 occurs exactly in between the full moon and new moon (with a week of time on each side) Other than it being a really short day, there will really be nothing spectacular to see with your naked eyes. Most television shows fail to tell the whole story behind, in hopes of building a better case for their doom-of-humanity money-makers.
Edit: Aside from it being a short day, the moon will appear as a half-moon, due to Earth's shadow.

NOBODY knows for sure what is going to happen in 5 years. I think you are just making trouble for yourself, relax and watch some baseball or football.
Your speculation that you shouldn't watch the History Channel is probably correct, given your reaction to the shows.

2012 is only special because of some people's interpretation of the Mayan calendar. It is just a calendar! And from a long gone civilization. Nothing will happen in 2012. It is just one more false end of the world myth.

Work on your relationship with Christ, and you will be just fine either way. But the other poster is right - no man will know the hour that Jesus will return. So, it cant be 12/21/12. But the day will come at some point, so just be prepared :-)

I don't give it much thought at all. I've already got enough stress in my life to last me several lifetimes without worrying that I may die before I'm ready (besides, there's a possibility that can happen to me anyway). Seriously though, what can you hope to accomplish by worrying about something like this?

There is no 'science' involved in predicting the end of the world. Since 1999 we have lived through about a dozen predicted ends or huge disasters. December 21st 2012 is not going to be the end of the world. If it is, what difference does it make? You're going to die, so what does it matter what you do?

I think that we were supposed to have been wiped out many years ago, and we are still here. Only God knows when we will be wiped out, and you are more likely to be wiped out in a more terrestrial way than being obliterated by a comet. BTW, didn't the Mayans come up with that calender? If they were that accurate at looking into the future, why didn't they save their asses when the Spanish came over and wiped them out?
