Isn't it evil to kill a magnificent creature?

No, I felt the same way, though my thoughts ran along these lines.

This particular shark was probably an important breeder, it's sheer size denoting age and success. When we take all of the big fish, this can result in dwarfism in a population, and the runts become the new survivors. Also, large predators eat small predators, this keeps an ecosystem in check because the small predators eat fish we ourselves often rely on. Killing all of the large predators results in an explosion of small predators, and fish stocks needed for food become depleted.

They should have recorded the measurements of their "trophy" then let it go. They'd have gotten their renown, and the shark would have gotten to continue performing its valuable functions in nature.

To NIXITY: You said "Research a little more before you get on your soapbox and cry about something. You need to actually read the entire article.. but FYI here's the last page from the Picture Story." Perhaps you should practice what you preach because what you are talking about has nothing to do with the story.

To start your shark catch was in Cali and the one being talked about was in FL. Yours was in 2006, this one happened a few days ago. I could go on but I think you get the point.

To the person who posted the question, yes I am sick about it myself. I have no problem with hunting/fishing/etc as long as it is done within the means of the law and was is killed is used. The shark might have been taken during a tournament, but sharks right now are going through huge problems between both legal and illegal fishing. Something like this will only cause more problems.

No, you are not the only one. I thought it was a horrible thing to do and made worse by watching those guys gloating about what they had done.

Edit: nixity, I didn't read about it, I heard the story from my tv news station and they did not say in the report that the shark was let go, it was still a cruel thing to take take it out of the water and string it up. If you were deprived of oxygen for awhile I don't think you would find the experience very pleasant at all. It was still a terrifying thing for the shark to have to endure. Why gripe at people for caring anyway? You should gripe at the ones who don't care about anything.

I agree, however in all fairness to those whom caught him game fishermen get caught up in the fight. You know a little like "The Old Man and the Sea", so I can't completely blame them. After all they weren't out to catch or kill a shark.

But yes, you're right the bottom line is a magnificent creature has been destroyed.

What exactly are you talking about? The story about the anglers who hooked the 600 lb, not 800lb, Mako off of the coast of SoCal did not catch it and kill it, they hooked it, took some pictures, and after awhile, released it.

So relax.

Research a little more before you get on your soapbox and cry about something. You need to actually read the entire article.. but FYI here's the last page from the Picture Story.

no not really , it was eating all the small fish they were catching and so they baited a hook and he took it , it was a fair fight and the anglers won he will be eaten so not all is lost for your perspective.........I would like to add that fishermen like myself are the greatest leaders in the protection and conservation of the navigable waters of this country our dollars have saved more Mako sharks than you could imagine from commercial fishing, habitat destruction and environmental pollution, without men like the ones who caught that fish all would be lost

I think it is wrong to fish for shits and giggles instead of out of need. I do think it's amazing they found a shark that large right off of the coast from where I grew up though! They totally killed it for no reason how wrong! I find it disgusting to hunt or fish for "recreation" please don't they have a full supply of food in your local grocer's freezer? Why the need to kill fish without reason?
