Homosexuality has been known since the earliest human cultures that kept records. Homosexuality was widespread in ancient Greece and to a lesser degree in Rome; it was known in the ancient far east and the near east. It was known and acknowledged among many American Indian tribes, and other tribal peoples.

So homosexuality has been around as long as mankind has been around, and longer (homosexuality exists in many animal species -- see Dr. Bruce Bagemihl; Biological Exuberance; St. Martin's Press for details of it in several hundred species). One of our nearest primate relatives, the Bonobonos, are entirely bisexual (nearly all members of the species have sex with both genders).

As for homosexual marriage -- evidence is strong (I don't have the time before a faculty meeting I have to attend to find you more than a handful of usable references -- below) that it existed not only prior to Christianity among many peoples -- but within Christianity in various forms until fairly recently.

I hope that these articles are helpful to you.

Kind thoughts,

Reyn

Um....You're going to need to delve further back in time than is actually possible. Terms have been added or changed in more recent years, but there are definite instances of homosexuality all through recorded history. Among those better recorded are the ancient Greeks and Romans, who had very open views on at least male homosexuality, and parts of it on the female part as well. Look up the island of Lesbos, or the poet Sappho, who has love poems written to other women.

As for marriage rights, the same historical view applies. It is only relatively recently, mostly since the spread of Christianity, that those rights were even taken away in the first place, in many cultures.

You need to do some googling.

There have always been homosexuals as long as there have been humans - and probably before that as homosexuality is common in the animal world and has been observed in over 400 different species. Homosexual couples help with the raising of kids and have a very good success rate.

Homosexuals have been able to marry in some cultures since whenever. The move towards legal unions, call them marriages if you like, has been going on for a long time now. Gay people should have exactly the same rights as anyone else and that is what this is about. With unions legalised, much of the discrimination against gays that is embedded in laws disappears.

In medieval Europe there was an institution called an afrerrement. It was two men being married.
During the American Revolution, the Continental Army was constantly losing battles to the British. The Continental Army wasn't trained in European style warfare. Then Baron Frederiech Wilhelm von Steuben showed up from Germany. He taught the Continental Army how to fight the European style of warfare. When they emerged from the winter quarters to engage the British, they came out swinging and won the war. Baron von Steuben was notoriously GAY. To this day, in the US Army field manuals on drill and ceremony and training, there is a tribute to the Baron. When the president of the united states looks out the window of the oval office, accross the lawn is a statue of the Baron looking back. We wouldn't be an independent country if it weren't for a gay man.
How's that for a couple of gay facts?

There is so much history here that the best thing I can do, is direct you to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality

..even if you don't want to cite wikipedia (being a sometimes incorrect source of info) it is a great place to get a general overview and facts to properly research.

PS Nathan rules1313 what a useless answer! I think she already knows what homosexuality is. And even then that description wouldnt be very mind-opening.

Gay and lesbian people are just like straight people. They have similar hobbies, interests; they have friends and a family that loves them. The *only* difference between straight and gay people is that gay people are attracted to people of the same sex, where as straight people are attracted to people of the opposite sex.
