He noticed the pattern of elements in chemistry, and felt their was an atomic reason for it all.

Dalton reasoned that the law of conservation of mass and the law of definite proportions could be explained only if matter was composed of atoms. He proposed as a working hypothesis an atomic theory that formed the basis for all modern developments in chemistry.
