Firstly, apologies for what must seem to you to be a stupid question. I;m just making sure.

If someone calls my laptop from their laptop, do only they use up memory during the call, or both of us? (I've noticed that skype uses up a LOT of memory and I was under the impression that it didnt. I am wondering if its because I am initiating all the calls)

Any program that you have running uses memory, it doesn't matter what it is. So yes, both PCs running Skype will use memory.
