Well...the found "diary" of Maybrick certainally would lead one to believe that this is the case. But the exact circumstances as to how the book was found were always cloudy and suspicious. So it leads me to believe that the entire thing was a hoax designed to make it appear as though Maybrick was the Ripper and his subsequent "poisoning' by his wife as the explanation for the sudden halt in the murders.
Its amazing how many theories come out of this. I sometimes wonder if it wasn't the Royal Surgeon who was responsible. That always seemed to be another plausible explanation.

No, hardly any reputable authority believes the alleged diary is authentic. Evidence which suddenly surfaces 100 years after the fact is always suspect.
Don't intend to turn this into a debate on the Ripper but I think Patrica Cornwell made a convincing if controversial case for Walter Sickert being the murderer in "Portrait of a Killer - Jack the Ripper: Case Closed."
Don't think we will ever have a high degree of certainty in this matter.

If James Maybrick were Jack the Ripper, his death in 1889 would explain why the murders ended when they did.

James Maybrick is as controversial as the 26 other suspects. I could not come to a conclusion.

I'm none to sure about this, a lot of signs point to this, a lot of books that I've read make this surmise. I really don't know why, but there is a niggling doubt at the back of my mind.

I saw a TV programme which seemed to make a pretty strong case at the time, but then another one would have demolished it, no doubt.
