"Germanic" is group of people s native to northern and north-central europe that share common linguistic and cultural roots, arugable also ethnic roots. It s a bunch of peoples, comparable to "slavic" peoples, which are another group of peoples within the same large group called indo-european peoples. Germanic peoples are commonly divided into two different subgroups, North germanic a.k.a Scandinavian or Nordic, Compromising roughly the modern nations of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. "Germans" belong to the west germanic group together with the dutch, frisians and english. Both the west and the north germanics are further branched into several more divisions. There are also the east germanic peoples which has all died out as cultures, The goths were the most famous. A small remnant survied on the Crimea peninsula until the early 1700s.

German usually refers to the state from these days
back to the times of the late Roman Empire and
everything associated with it. Germanic is usually
used for everything predating that and refers to the
tribes and is reaching much further. I.e. in terms
of similarities in language or culture.
