Ok, so I have just started knitting and bought my first pattern. I follow it up until it says:

"Next row: Knit to end dec 0 sts eveny across row. 23 sts"

So I knit... help?!

Sorry, I will also add:
It starts off as 23 stitches,
1st row = knit 2 purl 2 knit 2 etc... to last stitch
2nd row = knit 1 purl 2 knit 2 etc... to last 2 stitches, purl 2
Repeat 1st and second rows then 1st row again.
Next row = Kinit to end dec 0 sts eveny across row. 23 sts

How many stitches do you currently have on the needle?

I'm guessing 23 as your instruction shows no decreases at all!

If it did, you just knit two stitches into one, two from each end of each row.

Everybody so far seems to have the right answer. I'm not sure why your pattern specifies "dec 0(?) sts evenly across row", but it seems that you shouldn't decrease at all. Does this pattern include multiple sizes? Do you mind my asking what pattern it is? I might hypothesize that this is a typo if the pattern does not have multiple sizes, but that in turn doesn't make much sense because the stitch count is accurate.

You will, in all likelihood, encounter at some point in your knitting career at least one pattern with an error in it (try googling (or use Yahoo search...) "PatternName errata" or some similar phrase). Errata can be quite annoying, however, make sure that it is indeed an error before trying to correct the pattern. (one great place to ask knitting questions [Not that Yahoo Answers is bad, but the members of this site are knitters and somebody should be able to help you with just about any knitting question] is Knitter's Review Forums (not affiliated with them, link below)

I googled in "Elinor Brown Ridged Lace Cowl" because I wasn't happy about the extra stitches. .The pattern I looked at did not read what you typed. There is a bit missed out. First the abbreviations. SSK means slip the first st from the left needle, slip the 2nd st and then knit those 2 slipped sts together, thus decreasing 1 st. The * symbol means look out for an instrcution to repeat the instruction from * a given number of times. In this case 11 times. st = stitch yo = yarn over s1 = slip 1 st k = knit k2tog = knit 2 sts together. psso = pass slipped st over The pattern actually reads as follows SSK *yo,k1,yo,k2,s1,k2tog,psso,k2. Repeat the instrcutions after * 11 times yo,k1,yo,k2,k2tog You do not finish the round with extra sts. Each repeat has 2 X yarn overs which increases 2 sts. The s1 K2tog,psso then decreases 2 sts.

How many stitches did you start off with? If you have to dec.0sts evenly thats not a problem because you will have the same niumber of stitches that you started the row with.
:D

that row says to knit the entire row without decreases and you should have 23 stitches when your done with the row.

The ubove information is absolutely right. If you are not increasing or decreasing any sts then the work will always have the same sts on the needle when a row is done.

It means knit the whole row.

It is written like this for the purpose of different sizes.
If you knit this row and afterwards you still have 23 sts, then it is correct.
