Your wire must be rated for a wet location whether it is direct buried or in buried conduit. Be careful about taking electrical advise from untrained people on yahoo. You can direct bury a type UF cable or you can install individual type THWN wire inside pvc conduit. A light fixture does not have to be GFCI protected. Only a receptacle outlet does. But if it is GFCI protected, you don't need to bury it so deep. 12" as opposed to 24" on a 15 or 20 amp circuit. The size of the wire will depend on the distance you have to go and the total wattage of the lamps. Here is a calculator to determine wire size.

UF cable 12/2. Get a spade shovel and dig it under ground 12" if it isnt under a driveway(column 4 of table 300.5 of the NEC). The only protection you need for this wire is 12" of dirt and pipe where it comes out of the ground. You will have to use pipe on the side of your house and between the ground and light fixture with schedule 80 PVC or other rigid conduit.
Remember before you dig to get a ONE CALL or diggers hotline to check for other buried cables/pipes. They can also tell you how deep the wire is if one is in the area of work.

I would use simple 12-18 Volt (low voltage) garden path lighting with a focused beam spotlight. You won't need to protect the wiring if you do that.
If you use 110-120 Volt wiring, you're going to need to bury conduit to protect the wiring. The low voltage stuff is alot easier.

I like the low voltage idea.
I am a bit confused however; and with no offense meant at all; What Flag would be left flying in the dark?

I, Prof.DAGGER, set them that assignment so that high-flying honor student, Miss Calamity Jane, could make an amusing joke about their methods and their utter stupidity which were unique to the blonde race.
